THE WORKING BEHIND THE NUMBER
A little more clarity.
THE METHOD
Job cost = fabric + trims + (hours ร hourly rate) + overhead. Cost per piece = job cost รท quantity. Margin price = cost รท (1 โ margin). Markup price = cost ร (1 + markup).
Keep the job and the garment separate
Enter costs for the entire job, then let the quantity divide them into garments. If you are making ten identical pieces, enter the fabric purchase, trim total and total sewing hours for all ten. Mixing a per-piece fabric cost with batch labour would make the quote misleading.
Include your own labour even when you are the person doing the sewing. You can also allocate a share of equipment, packaging, payment fees or transport in overhead. Only costs you enter are recovered by this calculation.
Choose the profit measure deliberately
Markup measures profit as a percentage of cost. Gross margin measures profit as a percentage of the selling price. For an illustrative cost of 100, a 25% markup gives a selling price of 125; a 25% margin gives about 133.33. Neither percentage is a recommendation for your business.
The result is arithmetic for the inputs you choose. Taxes, discounts, refunds and any charges not entered remain outside the estimate. Use the displayed unrounded working to compare options, then round your final customer quote in a way that suits your selling process.
A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS
Before you cut.
Are margin and markup interchangeable?
No. A 30% markup multiplies cost by 1.30. A 30% margin divides cost by 0.70. The calculator shows both resulting percentages so you can check the method.
Does changing the currency convert the figures?
No. It changes the label only. Enter all costs in one currency before calculating.
What should I put in overhead?
Use the amount of shared expenses you decide to allocate to this job. Examples include equipment, workspace, packaging and fees. Do not add a cost twice if it is already in another field.
