HOW IT WORKS
Enter a decimal, simple fraction or mixed fraction.
Choose the original and target length units.
Use the decimal result or the clearly labelled rounded inch fraction.
THE WORKING BEHIND THE NUMBER
A little more clarity.
THE METHOD
Convert through centimetres using exact international factors: 1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 ft = 30.48 cm, 1 yd = 91.44 cm, 1 m = 100 cm and 1 mm = 0.1 cm.
Enter the measurement as written
You can enter a decimal such as 1.5, a simple fraction such as 3/8, or a mixed fraction such as 1 3/8. Common typed fraction characters, including ½ and ⅝, are recognised too. The converter treats the value as the unit selected in the first dropdown.
Use a dot for decimals and a space between the whole number and a fraction. A fraction with a zero denominator is rejected rather than silently converted. Negative values are accepted for arithmetic comparisons, although a physical cut length will normally be positive.
Choose precision for the task
The main table shows decimal equivalents with up to six decimal places. The fractional-inch helper is separately rounded to the nearest sixteenth. A very small measurement may therefore round to zero in that helper while remaining visible in the decimal result.
Use the decimal value if a sixteenth-inch rounding is too coarse. The tool converts length only: fabric weight, stitch density and currency require different units and are not inferred from these numbers. Check that the unit on your ruler matches the figure you copy.
A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS
Before you cut.
Can I enter mixed fractions?
Yes. Use a value such as 1 3/8. Common Unicode fractions such as 1½ are supported as well.
Is the fractional inch result exact?
It is rounded to the nearest 1/16 inch. The main decimal conversion uses the exact international conversion factors before display rounding.
Does this convert fabric weight or money?
No. This tool converts length units only. A currency or fabric-weight conversion needs a different set of inputs.
