Fit & finishing / FREE CALCULATOR
Garment ease calculator
Add or subtract your own ease allowances at the chest, waist and hip. See finished garment circumferences and a half-chest comparison before drafting or checking a pattern.

HOW IT WORKS
Measure body circumferences using a consistent method.
Choose total ease for the fabric, design and intended fit.
Use the finished targets to check a pattern or compare a garment.
THE WORKING BEHIND THE NUMBER
A little more clarity.
THE METHOD
Finished garment circumference = body circumference + chosen total ease. Half-chest comparison = finished chest circumference Ă· 2.
Choose ease as a design decision
Ease is the difference between a body dimension and the corresponding finished garment dimension. The amount you choose depends on the pattern, fabric behaviour, intended layers and silhouette. The sample numbers in this tool show the arithmetic; they do not prescribe the right ease for every garment.
Enter a complete circumference in each body field. Add total ease for that same circumference, rather than the allowance for one quarter of a pattern. Keep seam allowances separate, because they are sewn inside the finished garment.
Use the result as a target, not a complete pattern
A finished circumference does not specify darts, overlaps, shoulder balance or how front and back widths are distributed. The half-chest result is a comparison reference, not a ready-to-cut bodice measurement. Check the measurement line and the pattern’s own drafting instructions.
Negative ease makes the finished garment smaller than the body measurement. That can be intentional with appropriate stretch materials, but it needs a tested construction and enough stretch recovery. A positive result alone cannot establish comfort in movement.
A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS
Before you cut.
Is ease the same as seam allowance?
No. Ease belongs to the finished garment dimension. Seam allowance is extra fabric beyond the seam line and is handled separately.
Should I enter a full circumference or a flat width?
Enter the complete circumference. A flat garment measurement and a body circumference are not interchangeable without checking the measuring method.
Will the result tell me which size to buy?
No. It gives the finished targets for your own allowances. Compare those with a particular pattern or retailer’s garment measurements, using equivalent measuring points.
